Myles Houston was born February 27, 2001. He spent the first seven days after coming into the world in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). On the second day he was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21. During his stay his personality led to two nick names, “Mr. Hollywood” and “The Italian Lover”. Neither, of which he’s referred to as today, but from the two with him being so cool and loving “Hot Girls” as he says; he’s referred to as Mr. Myles. The first three to four years of Myles’ life were spent at his second home, Medical City of Dallas. At age three, he had to have surgery to close the PDA. Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a condition in which the ductus arteriosus does not close. The ductus arteriosus is a blood vessel that allows blood to go around the baby lungs before birth. Also at age three, Myles was placed in the ECI Program (Early Childhood Intervention) within the Garland ISD School District up to the 7th grade. He was also placed in Daycare at “Imagination Station”, as the first and only special needs child to attend through the summer after his fifth-grade year. In the first grade Myles participated in his first ‘Special Olympics” track meet. It was then he decided he wanted to do and participate in everything his sister does. Myles growing up could not say his sister’s name (Kiarra), so she told him to call her “Sister” and to this very day that’s how she’s referred to. Not only did he want to do everything sister did, but he also adapted to wearing one of her favorite colors of choice, the color white. For a career during the early years, he wanted to be a “Firefighter”, but he needed to wear the color orange. One day at the age of seven while in the Galleria, a DJ was playing at the grand opening of a new store. It was right at that moment in time, he wanted nothing outside of being a DJ. His DJ name to this date has been,” DJ So Cool Myles”. But he said until he becomes a DJ he will work at Chili’s because they have the best Chicken Tenders and Fries. That’s until he fell in love with accessories, then he said he will work at a jewelry store so he can wear bling necklaces and nice watches, until he becomes a DJ. At age fifteen, eighth grade, Myles enrolled in the Cedar Hill ISD School District. It was there Myles got the opportunity to participate in several sports within the CHISD Special Olympics Program. Myles was now able to do what he considers himself to be the BEST Bowler, the BEST Basketball Player, last but not least, the BEST Track Runner. Although basketball is his favorite sport, he totally enjoys them all. Again, he found himself doing all the things Sister does. At age sixteen Myles had a second surgery, Spinal Fusion. Spinal fusion, also called spondylodesis or spondylosyndesis, is a neurosurgical or orthopedic surgical technique that joins two or more vertebrae. This procedure can be performed at any level in the spine and prevents any movement between the fused vertebrae. Not only did Myles have a Superhero power “Down Syndrome”, but now Myles considers himself Bionic. He was now infused with two metal bars and 12 screws in his back. He was truly convinced when he came to realize that the surgery did not take away his SWAGG. Myles high school years were his favorite. Those were the years he achieved POPULARITY. He said popular is when you go to lunch, and everyone wants to sit at your table. Yes! I’m POPULAR! After high school Myles attended the CHISD Transitional Adult Education Program from 2020 to 2023. The Adult Program is where he truly found and experienced true friendship. One would describe Myles as family oriented with a love for social gatherings, being a DJ, basketball and last but not least his cool demeanor. Myles says now that he’s done with school, he’s going to “Take over the Whole City”. I love My Superhero. - Love, Mom <3
